U.S. Department of Energy Selects NewCarbon to Receive Funding to Help Decarbonize Michigan’s Industrial Sector

Chicago, IL (January 10, 2025) – We are thrilled to announce the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected NewCarbon to receive funding to advance the development of an electrochemical methane (e-methane) project in Michigan. Our project will convert captured carbon dioxide (CO2) into low-carbon-intensity synthetic fuel while enabling the production of low-carbon lime which is a critical input into industrial uses such as building materials, water treatment and steel production.

America’s industrial sector is critical to our nation’s economy. Our project supports the research and development of transformational technologies essential for creating jobs, enhancing energy independence with domestically produced clean fuels, improving American productivity in key industrial subsectors, and sustaining healthy communities.

NewCarbon is partnering on the project with Graymont, a reliable global leader for essential calcium-based solutions with more than 75 years in operation, and also collaborating with the Energy & Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota (EERC), a global leader in researching and developing technologies that make the energy we use and produce more efficient and environmentally friendly, and Black & Veatch, a global engineering, consulting, and construction company.

“We are honored to be selected by the DOE to advance this groundbreaking project that will enable the resilience and competitiveness of U.S. industrial supply chains in rapidly changing global markets,” said Omar Khayum, CEO of NewCarbon. “This project exemplifies why we founded NewCarbon, which is to deliver lifecycle carbon intensity reduction across industrial, agricultural and energy value chains.”

NewCarbon’s project will be funded through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office.
